This just gets better and better...
Today, I found out more details about the idiot who hit me. Not only was the insurance information she gave me bogus, but so was the address on both her drivers license and on her vehicle registration. Unless, of course, she happens to really live at the UPS Store a couple miles down the road from my office...
But I doubt it.
I also did a little surfing on the AZ Supreme Court website and found a 2006 court case .... (see http://www.supreme.state.az.us/publicaccess/notification/casedetail.asp?cs_id=keoiiiak&crt_name=Tucson%20Municipal%20Court) where she had been ticketed for excessive speed, and given probation. So... my guess is that she not only was uninsured, but may have been uninsurable altogether, yet was still out driving.
Gotta love how our system works... Virginia, Texas, and Michigan all have what are called civil remediation fees for risky drivers. Get a DUI, drive without insurance, or get caught doing 20+ the speed limit, and you get assessed a civil fine in addition to the traffic ticket. And it's the gift that keeps on giving -- you pay the fine for three years. In the case of a DUI, the fines run up to $2000 per year for three years.
Perhaps if AZ had similar laws, I'd feel better about the potential outcome, but instead, she'll probably get off with just the fine, and State Farm will have to try and find assets they can lien.
One thing is for certain -- it's going to be a while before this all gets resolved.
