747/DC10 Swap
In one of its cost cutting moves of the mid-80's, AA eliminated its entire fleet of 747 aircraft. They traded them to Pan Am for DC10's acquired from the purchase of National Airlines.
AA's 14 747-123s left the fleet between Dec 83 to Dec 84:

All six freighters were sold directly from AA to UPS, with a seventh -123F (the
original N9676 sold by AA in 75) being bought in 1991 from Federal Express.
* = The old 9662 was reregistered as the new N9676 in 1981. Both 20101 and 20391 carried the registration at separate times. The original N9676 was not part of the PA/AA deal.
Most of of the passenger -123s were on lease to AA, and show as re-leased to several carriers. Five were subsequently sold to UA in 1987 and 88. One has ended up with VS, and is named the " Sir Freddie Laker". The remaining two went into service with Pan Am, were modified to 123SCDs in 1988 and 89, and bought by UPS in 1992. As of late 1998, most of the non-freighter 747-123s had been scrapped or parked.
PA's 15 DC10s joined AA's fleet between Nov 84 and May 84:

As of February 1995, all remained in service with AA, except for N145AA, N151AA, N140AA and N141AA, which were parked at Marana, AZ, and N139AA which was written off after being damaged during a landing incident at DFW in 1993.
AA plans to have retired most of its -10's by year end 1999, and all of the -30's by year end 2001.
